India and Pakistan exchange diplomatic protests after fatal border shooting

India and Pakistan have exchanged diplomatic protests following a fatal shooting at the international border in the Punjab sector on October 2, 2026. The incident occurred in the Bedian/Ferozepur sector, resulting in the deaths of two Pakistani nationals, identified as Azmat Rasool and Mohsin Jutt, and injuring a third individual.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian Chargé d’Affaires, accusing India's Border Security Force (BSF) of using “unprovoked lethal force” against unarmed civilians. Islamabad rejected claims that the deceased were infiltrators and called for a transparent investigation into the incident, which they described as a violation of international law.

Conversely, India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Pakistani Chargé d’Affaires to protest the “continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration.” Indian officials stated that three individuals crossed into Indian territory and ignored multiple warnings from the BSF to return to Pakistan, posing an imminent security threat. New Delhi characterized the event as part of a pattern of movement by armed narcotics syndicates operating from Pakistani territory.
