Border wall construction begins in Big Bend, Texas

The Trump administration has begun constructing a new section of the border wall in the Big Bend region of West Texas. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed that the installation of the first steel panels is underway in the Big Bend 1 sector, located in Hudspeth County.

The project in this specific sector involves approximately 47 miles of infrastructure. While the broader Big Bend region spans roughly 500 miles of border and is divided into five project areas, the current work is limited to this initial segment. The planned infrastructure includes 30-foot-high steel bollard walls, new patrol roads, and various surveillance technologies designed to deter illegal crossings and smuggling.

The construction faces legal challenges from local opposition. The environmental organization Conserve Big Bend and several landowners have filed a lawsuit against the federal government to halt the works. Opponents cite potential environmental impacts, flood risks, and threats to sacred sites, arguing that the remote area does not experience high levels of irregular crossings. According to CBP, approximately 200 miles of new barriers have been constructed since the start of the second Trump term.
