Bordány, Hungary road upgrade stalled after 12 years
The town of Bordány in southern Hungary has been waiting more than a decade for the renovation of the 3.3‑kilometre section of road 5432 that links it with Zákányszék. The route is a key corridor for over ten thousand daily users travelling to work, school, health services and the nearby Mórahalom spa, as well as for tourists heading to the Serbian border crossing. Traffic has risen steadily while the road’s condition continues to deteriorate.
Although a 2022 decision allocated funding from the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme Plus to rebuild the missing segment, construction has not begun. Earlier upgrades in the region, including a 2024 road works programme, omitted the Bordány‑Zákányszék stretch. Population growth, increased vehicle flow and the 2025 bike‑path project have heightened safety concerns, leaving residents uncertain when the long‑promised upgrade will be completed.
