BORG Dreierschützengasse school to reopen in Graz following fatal shooting
Students and teachers at the BORG Dreierschützengasse school in Graz are set to return to their main building on September 14, marking the first time they will occupy the premises since a fatal shooting on June 10, 2025. The incident resulted in the deaths of nine students and one teacher.
In preparation for the return, the school building has undergone extensive renovations designed to address the trauma of the event. Areas directly associated with the shooting have been significantly altered; classrooms where the violence occurred have been decommissioned, and other specific locations have been redesigned. Education Director Elisabeth Meixner confirmed that the renovations and the implementation of a new structural security concept and access system will be completed in time for the start of the school year.
Student representative Manuel Mohr described the upcoming return as a “challenging day,” noting that he experienced “panic fear” during a recent guided visit to the renovated first floor. While the physical changes are intended to help the community move forward, the emotional impact of returning to the site remains a significant concern for the school community.
