Borgo Mezzanone faces waste collection crisis in migrant settlement
In the Borgo Mezzanone settlement near Foggia, waste collection services have been suspended for approximately three weeks, leading to significant accumulations of refuse. The area is home to roughly 3,500 migrants, many of whom originate from Senegal, Mali, and other African nations.
Francesca Stella of the Flai Cgil Foggia union reported that waste piles have reached heights of over one meter in some locations. The interruption of the service, which was established by the Puglia Region a year ago, has led to deteriorating hygienic conditions and the spread of foul odors. Recent rainfall has exacerbated the situation, turning waste bags into liquid sludge.
Flai Cgil has requested that the Prefecture of Foggia convene a meeting involving the Puglia Region to clarify the cause of the service stoppage and to implement a rapid solution.
