Borgo Ticino illegal exotic animal trade discovered in private basement

Carabinieri Forestali officers discovered an illegal exotic animal trade operating out of a private basement in Borgo Ticino, Novara. The operation was initiated after authorities monitored a Facebook page used to post frequent advertisements for the sale of rare and exotic species.

During a search authorized by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Novara, investigators found 27 animals kept in cramped, dark, and poorly ventilated conditions. The seized animals included African hedgehogs, gerbils, cockatiels, canaries, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, and giant snails. Veterinary inspections conducted by ASL Novara confirmed that several animals were suffering from various pathologies and required immediate medical attention.

The woman responsible, a foreign resident of Borgo Ticino, has been reported to judicial authorities for illegal commerce and for keeping animals in conditions incompatible with their nature. All 27 animals have been seized and transferred to a specialized association for recovery and care. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the animals and their supply channels.
