Boris Angelov stays in custody after Bulgarian court rejects reduced detention

Boris Angelov, a 35‑year‑old who was spectacularly detained in Kŭrshiyaka near Plovdiv, faces charges for a phone‑fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded victim Vasil Z of €50,000. The scheme involved Angelov promising cheap mobile phones sourced through alleged contacts at a telecom operator, for which Z paid the money in installments using a mortgage loan intended for home repairs. When the phones never arrived, Z reported the fraud to police, leading to Angelov’s arrest by the Economic Police’s Special Tactical Actions unit.

During a hearing before the Plovdiv District Court, Angelov appealed to have his pre‑trial detention replaced with a lighter measure, citing his status as a single father of seven children. The court rejected the request, keeping him in custody while the investigation proceeds.
