Boris Dilliès to undergo intensive Dutch language course

Brussels Minister-President Boris Dilliès will begin an intensive 60-hour Dutch language immersion course in Spa next week. The decision follows significant criticism regarding his limited proficiency in the language since taking office in February.

Dilliès, the former mayor of Ukkel, faced scrutiny during his initial press conferences when he struggled to communicate in Dutch. This led to public rebukes, including comments from Federal Defense Minister Theo Francken, who suggested Dilliès should seek a different profession if he is unwilling to learn the language. Additional criticism arose from the fact that government negotiations were initially conducted in French and a Dutch version of the coalition agreement was delayed.

Dilliès has acknowledged his shortcomings, stating, “I owe the people of Brussels a good knowledge of Dutch. It is essential, I plead guilty.” In addition to current lessons and listening to Dutch political podcasts, the upcoming program provided by the organization Ceran will focus on achieving fluency, precision, and impact through immersion in various professional and social settings.
