Boris Herrmann starts Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race

German sailor Boris Herrmann has begun the 13th edition of the Route du Rhum, a solo transatlantic regatta from Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe. Sailing the Malizia 4, Herrmann is the sole German competitor in the Imoca class.

In the opening hours of the race, Herrmann utilized a northern route strategy to secure fourth place. While the route is expected to be colder, Herrmann described the initial conditions as dreamlike. The race features 115 solo sailors across six different classes, covering approximately 3,542 nautical miles.

The Imoca class includes high-profile competitors such as Sam Goodchild and Ambrogio Beccaria. The fleet faces a journey across the Atlantic, with experts anticipating stronger winds in the coming days that could lead to attempts at breaking existing course records.
