Boris K-9, decorated FESC service dog, dies of cancer

Boris Van de Zilberenloop, a highly decorated K-9 agent for the Baja California State Citizen Security Force (FESC), has died following a battle with incurable pancreatic cancer. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda confirmed the news, noting his significant contributions to law enforcement operations.

During his four-year service, Boris was a multipurpose agent specialized in narcotics detection, guarding, and protection. He gained distinction for his bravery during a February 2023 shootout in Ensenada, where he was wounded by gunfire while assisting municipal police during a high-risk intervention involving an armed individual.

Boris received numerous accolades for his performance, including being named ‘Best Dog of the Year’ in the Special Operations category by the Mexican Canine Federation. He also earned recognition at the Riverside County Sheriff’s K9 Annual Championship and was honored as the ‘Most Tenacious Dog’ in 2023.
