Boris Nadezhdin flees Russia to avoid criminal charges

Boris Nadezhdin, a prominent Russian opposition politician, has fled to France following a rapid series of legal pressures in Russia. Nadezhdin, who was campaigning for the upcoming September parliamentary elections, was declared a ‘foreign agent’ on July 10, a status that restricts political participation.

Following his declaration, Nadezhdin was arrested on charges of displaying extremist symbols, which he characterized as ridiculous. After receiving a fine on July 17 and a notification that he was banned from leaving the country, he received a summons from Russia’s Investigative Committee. Fearing imminent criminal charges and imprisonment in the notorious Lefortovo prison, he chose to leave the country.

Nadezhdin is currently in Paris, having left his family behind in Russia. He expressed that while the situation is difficult, he is relieved to be free.
