Boris Nadezhdin flees Russia after barred from parliament

Boris Nadezhdin, a 63‑year‑old Russian opposition politician and former liberal lawmaker, has left Russia. In a short video filmed in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris he said he is "alive and free" and will consider his next steps.

The Kremlin designated him a "foreign agent" in July 2024, fined him 1,000 ruble (about $13) for displaying "extremist symbols," and barred him from standing in the September parliamentary election. He had previously attempted to run for the 2024 presidential election and was disqualified after the election commission rejected his candidacy. Nadezhdin has been a vocal critic of Russia’s war in Ukraine, and his departure underscores the intensifying repression of dissent ahead of the tightly controlled parliamentary vote.
