Boris Pistorius reports Bundeswehr reaches 2026 personnel targets
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the Bundeswehr has reached its personnel target for 2026 ahead of schedule, with the force now numbering approximately 192,000 soldiers. This growth, the largest since the era of compulsory military service, suggests that the reintroduction of conscription is not currently under debate. Pistorius views this development as a positive signal to NATO regarding Germany's strengthening defense capabilities.
Despite this growth, the military faces a long-term goal of reaching 460,000 personnel (including reservists) by 2035, leaving a gap of roughly 268,000.
Simultaneously, Pistorius has criticized the Berlin state government for its intention to terminate a cooperation agreement with the Bundeswehr established in June. He warned that ending this agreement would send a “signal against the Bundeswehr and its important mandate,” particularly as schools gain more autonomy in deciding whether to host youth officers. Pistorius emphasized that the military requires “unmistakable political support” from federal states given the heightened security threats and increasing hybrid attacks.
