Boris Popovič announces candidacy for Izola mayor

Boris Popovič, the former long-term mayor of Koper, has officially announced his candidacy for the mayor of Izola. To facilitate this transition, Popovič is resigning from his position as a member of the Koper City Council, with his resignation to be submitted this coming Monday.

Popovič, who served as mayor of Koper from 2002 to 2018 and again until his recent electoral losses, intends to focus his campaign on urban development, beaches, and sports infrastructure in Izola. He acknowledged that opponents may challenge his candidacy by pointing out that he is not a native of Izola, but he plans to campaign based on his previous administrative experience.

The announcement comes as the current mayor of Izola, Milan Bogatič, has confirmed he will not seek a new mandate. In response to Popovič’s entry into the race, local political parties and lists in Izola are reportedly searching for a common local opponent to challenge his candidacy.
