Borj El Amri power plant extension approved in Tunisia

Tunisia's Commission of Major Projects has approved the immediate launch of an extension project for the Borj El Amri power plant. The initiative aims to strengthen national energy security and meet rising electricity demand, which is growing at an annual rate of 4% to 5%.

The project involves installing a third gas turbine with a capacity of 250 to 400 MW at an estimated cost of approximately 600 million dinars. The extension is scheduled to enter operation in the summer of 2027. This development is intended to balance production with demand and reduce the need for power outages during peak consumption periods.

During the meeting, chaired by Head of Government Sarra Zaâfrani Zenzri, the project was officially designated as a strategic major project. Minister Salah Zouari noted that electricity demand reached a record peak of 6,400 MW in July, compared to 5,175 MW in 2025.
