Borka Vučić’s 2009 Fatal Crash Revives Serbia’s Cyprus‑Money Mystery
Borka Vučić, a senior Serbian bank director and longtime associate of former President Slobodan Milošević, died on 1 August 2009 in a serious traffic accident on the Belgrade‑Niš highway between Batočina and Lapovo. At the time of the crash she was serving as a member of the Serbian Parliament.
Her death sparked enduring speculation that she took with her knowledge of large financial flows that were allegedly moved out of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the 1990s sanctions. The so‑called “Cyprus mystery” claims that millions of dollars were transferred in cash to accounts in Cypriot banks, with Vučić, who headed a bank with a Cyprus branch, said to have overseen the operations. While no new evidence has emerged, the story remains a focal point of debate about the hidden assets of the Milošević era.
