Borneo forest fires threaten orangutan habitats

Devastating forest fires in Borneo are destroying natural habitats and food reserves for the critically endangered orangutan species. The fires, exacerbated by extreme drought and a Super El Niño event, have created thick clouds of toxic smoke affecting Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

In response to the ecological crisis, emergency rescue operations led by organizations including YIARI, BKSDA, International Animal Rescue, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, and WWF Indonesia have successfully rescued 53 orangutans.

To combat the ongoing threat, teams from the BOS Foundation and its subsidiary, PT Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia (RHOI), are conducting continuous monitoring and patrols in East Kalimantan. RHOI manages approximately 86,000 hectares of forest intended for orangutan rehabilitation and protection. These efforts include using satellite imagery and ground patrols to detect fire risks and prevent arson in vulnerable areas.
