Bornholm electrical grid faces capacity pressure and major upgrades

The electrical grid on the Danish island of Bornholm is facing significant pressure due to rising electricity consumption and increasing electrification. Energinet is currently working on solutions to increase capacity through the subsea cable connecting the island to Sweden, which has become a limiting factor for connecting new, large-scale electricity consumers.

Potential new developments, including hydrogen production and AI data centers, may further increase demand. To address these challenges, TREFOR El-net Øst projects an investment requirement of approximately 990.7 million DKK between 2027 and 2036. These funds are intended for upgrading medium, high, and low-voltage networks, including the installation of new 60 kV cables and increased transformer capacity. Electricity consumption in the area is expected to grow from 244,900 MWh in 2027 to 430,800 MWh by 2036.
