Borno State: 20 killed in ISWAP attack on Nigerian military base

Suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched an overnight attack on a military base in Mairari village, located in the Lake Chad area of Borno State, Nigeria. The assault resulted in the deaths of 15 Nigerian soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who had rushed to assist the troops.

Following a prolonged gun battle, the militants overran the position, looted weapons and valuables, and set fire to military vehicles and facilities. Several soldiers are reported missing, leading to concerns that they may have been captured. Troops were forced to withdraw toward the garrison town of Monguno.

The attack follows a similar deadly assault on a military outpost in neighboring Kukawa last week. This surge in violence comes amid a broader trend of increased attacks on military installations in the region over the past two years, occurring within the context of a long-running insurgency and ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria.
