Bornova Municipality implements renewable energy and sustainable agriculture projects
Bornova Municipality has implemented several large-scale clean energy and sustainability initiatives. The municipality has reached a clean energy capacity of 1.2 MW, including the completion of Turkey’s first ‘Carbon Zero City Garden’ and the establishment of a ‘Digital Twin’ infrastructure.
Solar energy projects have been installed on the roofs of the municipality’s cleaning services site and the central marketplace. The marketplace’s solar panels generate significant revenue and cover 76% of its energy needs, while the cleaning services site covers 48% of its requirements. Additionally, hybrid smart poles utilizing wind and solar power provide renewable energy for park lighting, irrigation, and security systems.
In terms of agricultural sustainability, the municipality operates an Ecological City Local Seed Center to preserve ancestral seeds and promote biodiversity. The municipality also hosts educational programs for students to foster environmental awareness and agricultural knowledge through interactive sessions at its local seed center.
