Bornova Municipality launches Turkey's largest 15‑acre urban farm for women and students

Bornova Municipality in İzmir has expanded its urban agriculture programme with a 15‑acre (approximately 30 dönüm) Kent Bostanı in the Yakaköy neighbourhood. Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the site, noting that it now ranks among Turkey’s biggest city farms.

Around 400 local women and university students take part in the harvest, gathering tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. The produce is taken home by the participants and a portion is distributed free of charge through the municipality’s Kent Market system to residents in need. The project is presented as a model of social solidarity, giving city‑dwelling women without garden space a place to grow food and earn a modest contribution to household budgets.

Eşki said the farm will continue to grow, with plans to use more idle urban land for similar initiatives, aiming to boost local food security and community engagement.
