Bornova Municipality launches urban garden project in İzmir

Bornova Municipality in İzmir is launching an urban garden project to revitalize idle land and promote local production. The Karacaoğlan Urban Garden is scheduled to open in September on the historic grounds of Yeşilova Höyüğü, a site recognized as one of the earliest agricultural locations in the Mediterranean region.

Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that the project aims to revive the area's 8,500-year-old agricultural heritage. The initiative will initially allocate garden plots to 220 women, who will cultivate nutritious winter crops such as cabbage, broccoli, and spinach. The project is designed to foster social solidarity, as participants are encouraged to share their harvests with neighbors.

The municipality intends to expand these urban gardens throughout the district, with a long-term goal of reaching 3,000 households through this local production network.
