Borralha Mine Project selected as EU strategic mining project
The European Commission has selected the Borralha Mine Project in Portugal as one of 46 new strategic projects designed to bolster the European Union's supply of critical raw materials. The initiative aims to diversify sources and strengthen supply chains across 16 Member States.
Located in the Salto parish of Montalegre, the project involves the reactivation of an old mine to focus on the underground extraction of tungsten, as well as copper and tin concentrates. Promoted by Minerália - Minas, Geotecnia e Construções, Lda., the tungsten extraction is considered vital for the defense and aerospace industries.
Under the European Critical Raw Materials Regulation, the EU has set targets for 2030 to secure at least 10% of its annual consumption of strategic raw materials through extraction, 40% through processing, and 25% through recycling. The selected projects cover various stages of the value chain to enhance competitiveness and reduce dependence on single suppliers.
