Borsa İstanbul opens lower amid global market pressures

Borsa İstanbul's BIST 100 index opened the week with a decline, dropping 0.25 percent to 14,604.26 points. This downward trend follows global market pressures, including signals from Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium regarding potential interest rate hikes if inflation does not meet targets, and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following US military actions near Lark Island, Iran.

Domestic economic indicators show mixed results. The SAMEKS Composite Index reached 50.3 in August, indicating limited growth as the industrial sector expanded while the services sector contracted. Economists forecast a 2.80 percent annual GDP growth for the second quarter of 2026.

In individual stock performance, Halkbank was the top weekly gainer in the BIST 100, rising 34.80 percent, while Batısöke Söke Çimento saw the largest decline at 12.78 percent. Tüpraş also showed strong performance, closing at 396.00 TL with a 4.01 percent daily increase. Gold prices and foreign exchange rates also saw slight upward movements.
