Borussia Dortmund faces criticism over playing style despite rising viewership
Borussia Dortmund is experiencing a disconnect between fan sentiment and television viewership. While some supporters on social media have criticized the team's playing style under coach Niko Kovac as unappealing or overly defensive, Sky TV ratings indicate growing popularity. Average viewership for Dortmund matches rose from 347,290 in the 2023/24 season to 504,000 in the following season.
Lars Ricken, Dortmund's managing director for sport, has defended the team's tactical approach. Ricken noted that while the club aims to play attractive football, it is not feasible or necessary to play an all-out attacking style across approximately 50 matches per season. He emphasized that the team has become an “uncomfortable opponent” for other clubs, noting that opponents often prefer a draw over a win when facing Dortmund.
