Borussia Dortmund uses AI to reconstruct first Bundesliga goal

Borussia Dortmund and its sponsor, Vodafone Deutschland, have used artificial intelligence to reconstruct the first goal in Bundesliga history. Scored by Timo Konietzka on August 24, 1963, during an away match against Werder Bremen, the historic moment was never captured on film or in photographs because the cameraman was not in position and photographers were focused on the opposing goal.

To create the moving images, experts analyzed eyewitness accounts, historical media reports, and various data points. The reconstruction involved the BVB U19 team reenacting the goal using a period-accurate football. Additionally, specialists used weather models and fan expertise to recreate the authentic stadium atmosphere and environmental conditions of the day.
