Borussia Mönchengladbach faces disciplinary tension after penalty dispute

Borussia Mönchengladbach is facing internal disciplinary issues following a 3-4 loss to Mainz in the Bundesliga. During the match, a dispute erupted between Japanese forward Shuto Machino and team captain Kevin Dykstra over who should take a penalty kick in stoppage time.

Dykstra had previously missed a penalty earlier in the game. When a second penalty was awarded, Machino refused to yield the ball to the captain. Despite attempts by teammate Philipp Sander to mediate, the tension remained high. Machino successfully converted the penalty for his first goal of the season, but Dykstra reportedly remained visibly upset and declined to participate in the celebration.

German media outlet Bild described the incident as a ‘serious disciplinary problem’ for a team that is currently at the bottom of the league standings after four consecutive losses and 16 goals conceded.
