Bosch announces job cuts in Nuremberg and AI integration in manufacturing
Bosch is implementing significant structural changes across its German operations, involving both technological advancement and workforce reductions. At its Nuremberg plant, the company plans to cut approximately 900 jobs by the end of 2029, effectively halving the current workforce of 1,800. This decision is driven by declining orders for internal combustion engine components, such as high-pressure pumps, and slower-than-expected growth in fuel cell technology. The cuts follow a broader corporate announcement of 22,000 job reductions globally, primarily within the mobility sector.
Simultaneously, Bosch is investing in advanced manufacturing technologies to optimize productivity. At its Bamberg site, the company is deploying “agentic” artificial intelligence through its “Shopfloor Agent” system. Unlike standard AI that merely flags anomalies, this system can evaluate error patterns, search documentation, and suggest specific solutions to minimize machine downtime. Bosch estimates that implementing this AI technology can save approximately 850,000 euros per plant annually by reducing production halts.
