Bosch launches sample production at its first U.S. silicon‑carbide chip plant

German auto‑parts maker Bosch has started sample production at its newly re‑configured semiconductor facility in Roseville, California. The plant, purchased from TSI Semiconductors in 2023, is the company's first U.S. chip factory and focuses on silicon‑carbide (SiC) devices used in high‑voltage applications such as electric‑vehicle powertrains and data‑center power supplies.

Bosch secured up to $225 million from the U.S. Commerce Department’s CHIPS Program under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act to support the re‑tooling. The total investment in the site reaches roughly $2 billion, with plans for full commercial production later this year and up to $7.5 billion of additional U.S. spending through 2031. Company executives cite the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement and national‑security considerations as drivers for locating the facility domestically.
