Bosnia adopts 'bucket of doom' method to curb mosquito larvae

A simple larval trap known as the “bucket of doom” is being promoted in Bosnia as a way to reduce mosquito numbers in residential yards. The method uses a 20‑liter container filled with water, plant debris and a preparation of the bacterium *Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis* (BTI). BTI kills mosquito larvae while remaining safe for humans, pets, birds and most other animals when applied as directed.

Experts say the trap works best when combined with broader mosquito‑control measures, such as eliminating standing water sources. They caution that a bucket without BTI could become a breeding site, and that the water and BTI solution must be refreshed regularly throughout the season. Proper placement—shaded areas near shrubs or fences—and covering the bucket with a mesh or lid to keep children and animals safe are also recommended.
