Bosnia and Croatia waste incidents raise food safety and environmental health alerts

A fire at the Uborak waste dump near Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina has prompted the national food‑safety agency to warn of possible contamination of fruit and vegetables from the Herzegovina region. Agency director Sanin Tanković highlighted the risk of airborne particles and long‑term soil and water pollution, urging thorough washing of leafy greens and increased monitoring of agricultural produce.

In western Croatia, police discovered about 40 tonnes of material in roughly 120‑litre barrels left at seven locations around Karlovac. Authorities are conducting urgent analyses to determine the contents, which are suspected to be a mixture of sludge and paint, and have ordered removal and proper disposal to protect the environment and nearby watercourses.
