Bosnia and Herzegovina border traffic snarls worsen under new EU Entry/Exit System

Heavy traffic congestion has developed at several Bosnian border crossings and on major highways as road works continue and Croatia rolls out the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). On the A‑1 motorway, sections near Kakanj‑Lašva, Sarajevo‑West‑Lepenica and Bijača‑Počitelj are under repair, forcing bi‑directional traffic onto detour lanes and limiting heavy‑truck access on routes such as Dobro Polje‑Miljevina and Tuzla‑Bijeljina. Border posts at Izačić, Velika Kladuša and Gradina report passenger delays of 10–30 minutes, while the new biometric EES checks at the Croatian side require 30–60 seconds per traveler, potentially extending wait times during peak tourist weekends.

The seasonal Sarajevo‑Ploče railway, a key tourist corridor, also faces problems. The on‑board restaurant car is out of service, and overgrown vegetation blocks scenic views of the Neretva River. After crossing into Croatia, passengers must undergo the same EES procedure, adding further delay to an already crowded train that can carry several hundred tourists.

Authorities advise drivers to travel cautiously, keep safe distances, and stay hydrated during the hot part of the day.
