Bosnia and Herzegovina Central Bank Applies for SEPA Membership

On 6 August, the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CBBiH) formally submitted an application to join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). The move is part of a strategic effort to integrate Bosnia and Herzegovina into the European payments market. If accepted, cross‑border euro transfers are expected to become faster, more secure and up to 94 % cheaper, potentially saving the country around €100 million annually.

The European Payments Council and other EU bodies will now review the documentation, possibly requesting additional information before a final decision. Following acceptance, banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina will need to align their IT and operational systems with SEPA standards, a process already underway through the Coordination Committee for SEPA Accession, which includes the country's finance ministries, banking agencies and the Association of Banks of Bosnia and Herzegovina. First SEPA transactions could occur as early as six months after formal admission. SEPA currently covers all 27 EU members and 14 additional European countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
