Bosnia and Herzegovina enhances public health safety and disease surveillance

The Institute for Public Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is implementing measures to enhance safety and public health monitoring. In Rakovica, the temporary radioactive source storage facility has been upgraded with specialized tools and equipment for the safer packaging and conditioning of radioactive waste. This project, supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency and involving Idaho National Laboratory, provides specialized capsules and containers to manage materials previously used in medicine and industry.

Simultaneously, health authorities are strengthening capacities to monitor poliomyelitis through the ‘IMMUNOGUARD’ project, supported by UNICEF. This initiative includes training medical staff in the ‘Training of Trainers’ model to improve the early recognition, reporting, and epidemiological investigation of acute flaccid paralysis. These efforts aim to bolster the regional immunization and surveillance systems against global health risks.
