Republika Srpska leader calls Constitutional Court ruling a 'declaration of war
Nenad Stevandić, President of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, has characterized the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina's decision to review the veto power of the Presidency member from Republika Srpska as a 'declaration of war' against the entity.
Following a session of the Committee for Constitutional Issues, Stevandić argued that the court is attempting to undermine the Constitution and create a dangerous precedent. He suggested that the move is driven by hostility, citing recent reactions to condolences regarding the death of Ratko Mladić. Stevandić also noted the possibility of external influence, though he stated he is certain that the US, Russia, and China are not providing such support.
The dispute stems from a request by Denis Bećirović, the Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to resolve a conflict involving Željka Cvijanović and the National Assembly of Republika Srpska. The core issue involves the appointment of members to a commission for the preservation of national monuments, a decision made without consensus that officials in Republika Srpska claim harms their vital interests.
Stevandić warned that if the Constitutional Court does not reject the appeal, the political discourse in the region will have to change significantly.
