Balkan schools begin 2026/2027 year with reforms and investments
The 2026/2027 school year has commenced across several Balkan nations, bringing various structural changes and infrastructure investments.
In Croatia, approximately 443,500 students are returning to classrooms. Key updates include the expansion of modular teaching in vocational schools, the introduction of new professions such as arborists and transport logistics technicians, and a return to a split winter break schedule. The Ministry of Science, Education and Youth is also continuing experimental all-day school programs in 62 primary schools. Local municipalities, such as Velika Gorica and Podstrana, are investing heavily in school facilities, inclusive education, and free educational materials to support families.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, significant milestones include the opening of a new school building in Novi Travnik, valued at over five million KM, which will house several educational institutions. Additionally, local schools are upgrading facilities, such as the new informatics lab in Nova Bila.
In Montenegro, the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation has invested approximately 235,000 euros into the Petar I Petrović Njegoš Gymnasium in Danilovgrad for renovations, new furniture, and STEM equipment.
In Slovenia, schools like Jurij Vege Idrija are also beginning the new term with updated curricula, particularly in mechatronics, and improved technical classrooms.
