Bosnia and Herzegovina level crossing accidents highlight safety failures

A near‑miss at the Janjići level crossing in the Zenica municipality showed a freight train passing while the protective ramp remained raised and the warning lights were non‑functional. Drivers noticed the hazard and stopped, averting a collision, and local officials were urged to repair the faulty equipment immediately.

A separate, fatal incident occurred on the level crossing between Odžak and Lalić. Security‑camera footage confirmed the ramp had lowered, but the driver of a white car, a pregnant woman, attempted to bypass it by entering the opposite track. A passenger train struck the vehicle, killing the woman and her three‑year‑old son.
