Bosnia and Herzegovina outlines eligibility for family pension benefits
The Federal Pension and Disability Insurance Institute (MIO/PIO) clarified the conditions for receiving a family pension in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Eligible beneficiaries include the surviving spouse or partner, divorced spouses who have a court‑issued right to maintenance, children (born in or out of wedlock, adopted or orphaned), and other dependents such as a pastor cared for by the deceased.
Recipients must not be simultaneously enrolled in compulsory pension insurance. The legal framework is set out in the Law on Pension and Disability Insurance, specifically articles 68‑70, which define the qualifying relatives and the requisite circumstances, such as the deceased having met the criteria for old‑age or disability pension at the time of death. For widows, eligibility requires the deceased spouse to have been at least 50 years old or completely unable to work on the day of death. The information was provided to Radiosarajevo.ba by officials of MIO/PIO.
