Bosnia and Herzegovina placed on FATF gray list, financial sector says it remains stable
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) added Bosnia and Herzegovina to its gray list of jurisdictions under enhanced supervision, citing insufficient measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. FATF President Elisa de Anda Madrazo said, “Bosnia and Herzegovina was added to the gray list at the plenary session because additional work is needed to strengthen its defense against criminals and terrorists who abuse its financial system.”
Bosnian authorities—including the Central Bank, the Deposit Insurance Agency and the banking agencies of the Federation and Republika Srpska—issued a joint statement that the financial sector remains stable, liquid and adequately capitalised. They noted that payment systems continue to operate smoothly and the convertible mark stays firmly tied to the euro.
Officials warned that the gray‑list status could lead to extra checks on international transactions, longer processing times and higher administrative costs for businesses and citizens, although no direct sanctions or threats to banking stability were announced. The EU delegation urged rapid implementation of the required reforms, and regional experts cautioned that the new scrutiny may become visible in everyday banking operations.
