Croatia‑Bosnia border openings and road works reshape summer traffic

From 8 June 2026 the border agreement between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is being implemented. Seven checkpoints – Mali Prolog, Prud, Gabela Polje, Metković, Imotica, Čepikuće and Slano – will operate 24 hours a day for passenger traffic, and the previous restrictions on vehicle types have been lifted. Empty light‑truck vehicles of category N1 (maximum authorised mass up to 3.5 tonnes) may now cross these points, subject to police and customs checks that verify the vehicles are empty.

At the same time, extensive road works across Bosnia and Herzegovina are causing partial closures and altered traffic regimes. Works on the M‑17 (Šamac‑Sarajevo) and M‑4 (Doboj‑Banja Luka) highways, as well as on regional and local routes such as RP‑474, LC‑11 and LC‑17 (Tešanj‑Medakovo‑Tešanjka), involve lane reductions, alternating one‑lane traffic, and weight limits of 30 tonnes on certain bridges. Specific sections – for example the Višegrad‑Brodar stretch, the Srbac‑Derventa corridor and the Vransko‑Jelovica‑Prijedor route – have scheduled stoppages or reduced speed limits. The Auto‑Moto association of Republika Srpska and the BiH road authority advise drivers to observe the posted signage, respect the temporary limits, and exercise extra caution, especially where landslide risk or construction activity is noted.
