Bosnia and Herzegovina seeks new technology to find 7,588 missing persons

More than three decades after the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to search for 7,588 missing persons. During a press conference marking the International Day of the Disappeared, the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (INO BiH) emphasized the urgent need to adopt modern technologies to accelerate the search process.

To combat the challenges of passing time and a diminishing number of witnesses, the Institute plans to acquire geosonars and drones capable of performing both surface and deep soil searches. These tools, combined with specialized software, can help identify human remains or disturbances in terrain configuration. Additionally, the Institute intends to utilize search dogs and artificial intelligence to process vast amounts of documentation within its central records.

Šimun Novaković of the INO BiH Board of Directors noted that discussions are underway with the Missing Persons Agency of the Republic of Serbia to test geosonar technology at various locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, the Institute has initiated procedures to activate 600,000 KM in operational funds intended to reward information that leads to the discovery of human remains.
