Bosnia DIY Guide: Restoring Silver Jewelry Shine and Safeguarding Cash with Aluminum Foil

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, experts explain that silver jewelry can lose its characteristic shine when exposed to moisture, perfumes, cosmetics or sweat. A simple home remedy uses a paste of three parts baking soda and one part water, gently rubbed onto the piece, or a bath of hot water, aluminum foil and baking soda for up to thirty minutes, followed by rinsing and polishing. Caution is advised for items with pearls, gemstones or glued parts, which may require milder cleaning methods and proper storage in dry conditions.

A separate household tip circulating on social media suggests wrapping banknotes in aluminum foil to protect them from humidity, heat, sunlight and pet damage. Specialists note that while foil can offer a modest barrier against moisture and dirt, it does not prevent theft, fire, flood or severe degradation. They recommend keeping cash flat, in hermetically sealed bags or boxes with desiccant packets, rather than relying on foil alone.
