Bosnia-Herzegovina poll shows 74% backing EU membership

The Directorate for European Integration (DEI) conducted a public‑opinion survey in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 23 April to 13 May 2026, interviewing 1,200 respondents nationwide. The poll found that 74.4 % of citizens would vote in favor of EU accession if a referendum were held, a rise of 4.5 percentage points from the previous year.

Support is highest in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (86.1 %), followed by the Brčko District (74.7 %) and the Republika Srpska (54.1 %). The leading reasons for supporting EU membership are guaranteeing lasting peace and political stability (38.4 %), increased freedom of movement for people, goods and capital (34.5 %), and better law enforcement and infrastructure development. The most common objections relate to expected higher living costs and taxes (54.3 %).

Nearly half of respondents (44.8 %) view a stronger fight against corruption as the most crucial reform, and 51.2 % say the European path has no alternative. About one‑third (33.9 %) believe Bosnia could join the EU within ten years, while 65.1 % still see the EU as the largest donor to the country.
