Bosnia‑Herzegovina migration to Germany hits lowest level since 2012

German Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) data for 2025 show that 13,707 people emigrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Germany, while 10,474 returned, leaving a net migration gain of 3,233 for Germany – the smallest net balance recorded since 2012. The net figure had been +11,032 in 2023 and +7,056 in 2024, indicating a steady decline in outward migration.

The statistics also reveal movement among German citizens: 132 German nationals left Bosnia and Herzegovina for Germany, whereas 314 returned, giving Bosnia and Herzegovina a net gain of 182 in that category. In the Tuzla Canton, the number of students returning from abroad rose to 136 in 2025 from 82 in 2024, with nearly a third coming from Germany. Officials such as Mirhunisa Zukić note that return migration exists but lacks organized support, calling for procedural reforms to facilitate reintegration.

Overall, the data suggest a shift in migration patterns, with fewer people leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina for Germany and an emerging trend of returnees, especially among students.
