Bosniak community plans mosque and cultural center in Bruck an der Mur
The Bosniak Islamic community in Austria has begun collecting donations for the construction of a mosque and cultural center in Bruck an der Mur, located in the state of Styria. The proposed facility is intended to serve as a space for prayer, youth education, and various cultural activities. The architectural design for the large structure is reportedly envisioned to resemble a bridge.
The project has met significant political opposition from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Styrian state parliament deputy Philipp Könighofer stated that the proposal has caused irritation and uncertainty among residents, vowing to oppose the project through all available legal and political means. Additionally, Deputy Mayor Raphael Pensl expressed concerns that the scale of the building would alter the historical character of the town and its surroundings.
As of now, the realization of the project remains uncertain. The community has not yet finalized the purchase of the intended land on Schleppbahngasse, which is currently owned by an entrepreneurial family. Furthermore, local authorities indicated they only became aware of the specific scale of the mosque design through social media announcements rather than official municipal channels.
