Bosnian olm identified as new species under Grmeč

An international study published in the journal Amphibia-Reptilia has revealed that the cave-dwelling salamander previously classified as a single species, Proteus anguinus, actually comprises nine distinct species. Three of these are entirely new to science.

Among the newly identified species is the Bosnian olm (Proteus bosniensis), which is specifically linked to the underground water systems of the Krajina region, particularly beneath Mount Grmeč. While these creatures have long been known to inhabit the area, modern research has now confirmed their status as a unique species.

The research involved Bosnian biologists Emina Šunje from the University of Sarajevo and Adnan Zimic from the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
