IVYAN tanker drifts toward Kanlıca coast in Bosphorus after engine failure

The Malta-flagged chemical tanker IVYAN experienced a machine failure while navigating the Bosphorus, causing it to drift dangerously toward the Kanlıca coast in Istanbul. The 107-meter vessel, which was transporting approximately 6,000 tons of vegetable oil from Varna, Bulgaria, to Monopoli, Italy, approached the Kanlıca Ferry Pier and historic waterfront mansions (yalıs) before the crew successfully prevented a collision by dropping anchor.

Following the incident, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure temporarily suspended two-way maritime traffic in the Bosphorus to ensure safety. The General Directorate of Coastal Safety deployed several rescue tugs and boats, including KEGM-4, TAHLISIYE-2, TAHLISIYE-9, KURTARMA-7, and KURTARMA-11, to assist the vessel. The tanker was scheduled to be moved to the Küçükçekmece anchorage area for further inspection and safety measures.
