Boston Bruins coach Marco Sturm defends benching young players

Boston Bruins head coach Marco Sturm addressed scrutiny regarding his decision to bench young forwards Matt Poitras and James Hagens during the final minutes of a game against the Dallas Stars. Despite both players scoring earlier in the contest, neither saw ice time during the closing five minutes of regulation or throughout overtime in the 3-2 loss.

Sturm explained that the decision was influenced by the difficult atmosphere in Dallas and a significant momentum shift after the Stars tied the game. He stated that he felt the need to protect his younger players from being placed in a high-pressure, disadvantageous situation while the team was on its heels. While Sturm expressed a desire to use these players in similar high-stakes scenarios to aid their development, he maintained that the specific timing of this game was not appropriate for doing so.
