Boston Celtics face scrutiny over Jaylen Brown trade for Paul George
The Boston Celtics face scrutiny following an offseason trade that sent Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, draft picks, and other assets. ESPN analysts have provided critical evaluations of the move and Brown’s individual standing.
In an NBA Rank audit, ESPN’s Dean Oliver noted a discrepancy between voter perception and advanced metrics regarding Brown. While voters ranked him as high as No. 9, metrics placed his average around No. 60, citing factors such as high turnover rates and limited vision. Brown has previously challenged such analytics, suggesting they are used to “discredit and control narratives.”
Regarding the trade itself, ESPN’s Zach Kram assigned the Celtics a D+ grade, arguing that swapping Brown for George “makes the Celtics worse” and lowers their playoff ceiling. While the Celtics acquired Paul George to bolster perimeter scoring and defense, along with bench upgrades in Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley, critics suggest the move represents a “giant step back” for the championship franchise.
