Boston Celtics' John Tonje Shines in Summer League, Seeks Roster Spot
John Tonje, a 25‑year‑old guard for the Boston Celtics, delivered a strong showing in the NBA Summer League held in Las Vegas. On July 18 he recorded 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal while shooting 66.7% from the field. Over the tournament he averaged 14.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and a assist per game, shooting 51% overall and 45.2% from three‑point range.
Celtics forward Amile Jefferson praised Tonje’s defensive effort, noting that he performed at a high level on both ends. Tonje expressed confidence about his NBA future, saying he feels “pretty confident, maybe even delusional” about earning a roster spot. With only one open roster slot and limited two‑way contracts available, Tonje will compete for a potential two‑way deal alongside other prospects such as Milos Uzan and Dillon Mitchell.
